Utensils

We have created this page to meet the demands of our students who ask us what, where and how to buy tools to begin an independent path for woodworking.

Here is a list of essential equipment and a very brief description of their use.

Pencil: we recommend using a 0.7 mm pencil holder because it is more practical than the classic pencil. The mine adheres better to the surface of the check (rule – square etc) offering a more precise and clean line.

Cutter: useful for pre-engraving the wood and then working with a chisel or saw. The incision partly avoids the splintering of the wood when working at the exit through a vein.

Squad: in the version for use in carpentry we recommend using those without hypotenuse and with the shortest cathetus more often so that it can be placed on a board as a guide to draw lines at 90 ° and 45 ° degrees

False squad: it is composed of two elements joined by a pin that allows them to be closed or opened; there is a screw locking system on the pin that allows you to set the desired angle. It is useful for reproducing the necessary angle if it is not at 45 ° or 90 °, for example for dovetails.

Truschino: It is a very simple tool that is used to engrave a thin guideline at a constant distance on a flat wooden surface. It consists of two strips of hard wood, called rulers, which can also be graduated. one or two small metal points, each fixed to the end of a ruler, which are used to engrave the reference lines on the piece. A wooden support with one or two passing rectangular holes in which I can slide the rules. On the support there is a fixing system (wedge or screw) which allows to lock the slides at the desired distance. The truschino is used by fixing the rule of the rules and by sliding the support (ledge) along the edge of the piece, thus obtaining the tracing of one or more lines parallel to the edge.

Planer: Use the principle of a chisel inserted in a box. The manual planes can be made of hard wood, metal but also hybrid with metal and wood body. The planer consists of a log which is the main body; the sole, the lower part of the stock; the slot, slot on the sole that can be fixed or adjustable; the hole or jaw, which starts from the slot and crosses the log, widening. The shavings produced by the planing are discharged through the hole; the iron or knife, the sharp part of the plane; the wedge that holds the iron in place in the hole and in the slot.

Chisel: has the straight blade with the cutting edge placed transversely, on the face at the end of the blade, the one furthest from the handle. It is used to make joints, grooves, corrections on the wooden surface.

Saws: American or Japanese? the first work in thrust and the second in traction. We recommend Japanese ones because they usually have a thinner and cleaner cut but the disadvantage is that they cannot be sharpened in contrast to traditional saws.

Compass: with two points it is used for direct measurement (like the truschino) and is used to bring the same distance on other surfaces or repeat it in sequence without errors.

At the moment we have published the tool codes that can be purchased on the German DICTUM website. In Italy we have CREMONA TOOLS. For our students 5% discount for catalog tools. Send us an email to find out how to get the discount. The prices shown are indicative, consult the manufacturer’s website.
